Exam PatternStage 1: Shortlisting (Academic Filter) - JEE Main Rank: Shortlisting is based entirely on your JEE Main 2026 All India Common Rank List (CRL).
- 10+2 Board Cutoff: You must have secured a minimum of 70% aggregate marks in PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) and at least 50% marks in English (either in Class 10th or 12th).
- The Call Letter: The Indian Navy fixes a cutoff rank based on the volume of applications. If your JEE Main CRL rank falls within that window, you will receive a direct call-up letter via email/SMS for the next phase.
Stage 2: 5-Day Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview Shortlisted candidates are sent to one of the designated Naval Selection Centers (Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kolkata, or Visakhapatnam) for a rigorous 5-day evaluation divided into two specific operational phases: - Phase I: Screening Test (Day 1)
- OIR (Officer Intelligence Rating): Two booklets of basic verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions.
- PPDT (Picture Perception & Discussion Test): You are shown a hazy picture for 30 seconds, given 4 minutes to write a story around it, and then broken into groups to narrate your story and discuss to reach a common group consensus.
- Note: Failing Phase I means immediate return home on Day 1.
- Phase II: Psychological & Group Testing (Days 2 to 5)
- Psychological Testing: Written assessments including the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), Word Association Test (WAT), Situation Reaction Test (SRT), and Self-Description (SD).
- GTO (Group Testing Officer) Tasks: Outdoor and indoor team assignments including Group Discussions, Group Planning Exercises, Progressive Group Obstacles, and Individual Obstacles.
- Personal Interview: A one-on-one comprehensive discussion with a senior interviewing officer assessing your presence of mind and suitability.
- Board Conference (Day 5): The final collective review where all assessors declare whether a candidate is recommended or not.
Stage 3: Medical Examination & Final Merit List - Medical Board: Recommended candidates undergo a thorough health review at a designated military hospital to check for vision parameters, height-weight proportions, and overall physical fitness.
- Merit List: A final all-India merit list is prepared strictly based on the marks scored during your SSB Interview. Candidates who are medically fit and place high enough in the merit list receive their final joining letters.
