Age Limit & Selection Process

  • Selection Process: Written Exam (Paper-I: 250 Marks GS Objective, Paper-II: 200 Marks Descriptive) + Physical Efficiency Test (PET)/Physical Standards Test (PST) & Medical Test + Interview/Personality Test (150 Marks)
  • Ex-Servicemen Quota: 10% of the total vacancies (approx. 35 seats) are earmarked for Ex-servicemen.
  • Service Preference: You will be asked to fill in your order of preference for these forces during the application process. Your final allocation will depend on your merit rank and your preference.

  • Assistant Commandant: Level 10 - ₹56,100 - ₹1,77,500 (7th Pay Commission).
  • Initial Gross Salary: Approximately ₹95,000 - ₹1,10,000 per month (varies by city and risk profile).
  • Additional Benefits: DA, HRA, Allowances - Ration Money, Uniform Allowance, Medical Facilities, and Transport Allowance (TA). Risk/Hardship Allowance - Ranging from ₹17,300 to ₹25,000 for difficult terrain or operational areas.
  • Gazetted Status: You are a Group 'A' Gazetted Officer under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Detailed Progression Breakdown

  • Assistant Commandant (Entry Level): You start as a Group 'A' Gazetted Officer, commanding a company of 120–150 personnel.
  • Deputy Commandant (4–6 Years): First promotion based on seniority and performance. You handle more administrative and operational planning.
  • Second-in-Command (10–12 Years): Responsible for the logistics and overall administration of a battalion.
  • Commandant (15–18 Years): The Commanding Officer (CO) of a battalion, holding full operational control.
  • Deputy Inspector General (20–23 Years): Moves into a supervisory role over multiple battalions (Sector level).
  • Inspector General (25–28 Years): Heads a Frontier (State-level or region-level command).
  • Director General (Top Rank): The highest position in the force, typically reached after 30+ years of distinguished service.

Exam Pattern

  • Stage 1: Written Examination (450 Marks): The written test is conducted in two sessions on the same day (July 19, 2026).


  • Paper I: General Ability and Intelligence
    • Type: Objective (MCQs)
    • Marks: 250 (125 Questions, 2 marks each)
    • Duration: 2 Hours (10:00 AM to 12:00 PM)
    • Negative Marking: -0.66 (1/3rd of marks) for every wrong answer.
  • Paper II: General Studies, Essay, and Comprehension
    • Type: Descriptive (Subjective)
    • Marks: 200
    • Duration: 3 Hours (2:00 PM to 5:00 PM)
    • Languages: Essay (English or Hindi); Precis & Comprehension (English only).
    • Evaluation Rule: Your Paper II is only checked if you clear the cut-off for Paper I.

  • Stage 2: PST/PET & Medical Test (Qualifying)

  • 100m Race: 16s (Male) | 18s (Female)
  • 800m Race: 3m 45s (Male) | 4m 45s (Female)
  • Long Jump: 3.5m (Male) | 3.0m (Female) - 3 chances given.
  • Shot Put (7.26 kg): 4.5m (Male only) - 3 chances given.
  • Medical Exam: Comprehensive check for eyesight, hearing, and general physical fitness.

  • Stage 3: Interview / Personality Test (150 Marks): Candidates who qualify for the medical round are invited for a personality test at the UPSC office.

  • Final Merit: The final list is prepared based on 600 Marks (Written 450 + Interview 150).
