Short Information:

The Union Public Service Commission is set to release the notification for the Civil Services Examination 2026 on 14 January 2026. Around 950 to 1100 vacancies are expected across services like IAS, IPS, IFS and other central services. Graduates between 21 and 32 years of age, with relaxation for reserved categories, will be eligible to apply from the same date through upsc.gov.in. The preliminary exam is scheduled for 24 May 2026, followed by the mains from 21 August 2026.

Exam Pattern

  • Exam Type: Prelims (Objective MCQ), Mains (Descriptive), Interview
  • Total Questions: Prelims: 180 Questions for 400 Marks (GS Paper II CSAT Qualifying 33%)
  • Duration: Prelims: 2 Hours per Paper | Mains: 3 Hours per Paper
  • Negative Marking: 1/3rd marks deducted for wrong answer in Prelims
  • Preparation Time: 12-18 months recommended for comprehensive preparation
  • Stage 1: Preliminary Exam (Objective)
  • Paper I (GS): 100 Qs | 200 Marks | Decides the Cut-off.
  • Paper II (CSAT): 80 Qs | 200 Marks | Qualifying (Need 33% or 66 marks).
  • Stage 2: Mains Exam (Descriptive)
  • Consists of 9 papers total (2 Qualifying + 7 for Merit).
  • Qualifying: English and Indian Language (300 marks each).
  • Merit Papers: Essay, GS I, GS II, GS III, GS IV, and 2 Optional Papers (250 marks each).
  • Total Written: 1750 Marks.
  • Stage 3: Interview (Personality Test)
  • Marks: 275
  • Final Merit: Based on Mains (1750) + Interview (275) = 2025 Marks.

  • All India: Candidates can choose from 80+ centers across states (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, etc.)
